What to Look for When Buying a Used Car

When you’re searching for a used car, there are obvious things you’ll notice first. Color, style, and seats are probably the most common details people focus on. But there are less apparent items you should be aware of that can drastically affect the quality of the vehicle you get.

Get the facts first

A good starting point is a vehicle history report. To get one, you’ll need the vehicle identification number, or VIN. These reports have detailed information about the actual mileage, damage or flood history, make and model recall alerts, incidents of theft, and whether the vehicle has ever had a lien on it.

One of the most critical statistics on the report is damage history, which can cover a lot of territory. While the vehicle report may not have minor fender benders listed, any significant accidents handled through an insurance company will show up. Another tell for accidents is the airbag deployment record. This part of the report shows that something bad enough to activate the airbags occurred.

Don’t forget to review the actual mileage stated on the report as well. Some sellers have been known to change the odometer to show fewer miles driven. Their hope is that they can command a higher selling price. Not only is this dishonest, but it’s also illegal. Your vehicle history report will show you the actual mileage of the used car.

A second opinion can help too

Along with a vehicle history report, you may want to inspect the car in person. It is a good idea to ask a mechanic that you trust to accompany you. Their trained eye will notice things that you may not have even known to ask about. They can compare the vehicle history report with what they see in person and alert you to any discrepancies.
